Happy Halloween! It is another beautiful day, and the sun is shining. We went for a walk in the woods yesterday and did not run into or see ANYONE. We could hear the birds chirping and the sounds of the leaves crackeling under our feet. It was so peaceful and relaxing. We also saw a squirl (or was it a chipmonk?) and he/she scurried up a tree with lightning speed. He made it up to the halfway point, turned around, and just STARRED at us. I think he wanted to say “Come and get me!” This is not very exciting at all, but it is an exercise in short-term memory recall. If you would have asked me what I saw several years ago, I doubt I could remember. Perhaps it is because other senses were involved. The senses would be sight, smell, and touch. There are two more senses, correct? Is it taste? I simply cannot come up with the 5th sense. I will get back to you on that. I hope you all have a happy and safe Halloween!

When you look back on your life, what do you see? “I wish I would have done that” or “I wish this situation would have turned out differently/better!” Is it the “guilt complex?” Why do we fell bad about ourselves, what we have or have not done? Where does “guilt” come from? More specifically, where does YOUR guilt come from? I’m not sure if it is a part of the healing/recovery process for those with TBI, or just my own thoughts. I feel “guilty” about getting into a car accident. I feel “guilty” about the pain and stress and hardships I have “brought upon” my friends and family. Could I have avoided this accident? Did I fall asleep? Did I get distracted by something, like a deer? The electric connections in my brain have not allowed me to recall anything about the accident, or days and months prior to the incident, for that matter. Maybe one day it will all come back to me. Maybe there will never been a “one day.” I have to accept this fact and not dwell on it. I thank God and my friends and family that I am alive, and, as a cool and wonderful bonus, I re-learned how to walk and talk and read and write. So, I have THAT going for me! I am getting through this, one day at a time, with help and support from all of you! There are not any “first-second-third place” trophies. I have a “participation trophy,” and I AM OKAY WITH THAT! Being an “active participant” in my own life each and every day is my montra. These are my rambiling thoughts for this morning. I hope all of you have a wonderful Wednesday! Thanks for taking the time to read my blog!

This is a serious communication breakdown. More of the time you know what you’re trying to say. You know the key points you are trying to make. But once you are put on the spot, you simply crumble. Improvisation is not a feasible option. That is ironic, because you were in the Renegade Improvisational Comedy Olympics in high school. If other people would just give you a little more time it would come to you. You get stressed out and sometimes just choose not to speak at all. If someone talks for an extended period of time you have difficulty recalling the original topic. Spontaneity is also not a strong point anymore. So you have learned a few tips through trial and error, with a huge emphasis on the “error” factor. It is not foolproof, but this is what you find to be the most helpful. If you are talking with someone on the telephone, try to have a piece of paper and pen or pencil handy. There is always the possibility that you will misplace the notes you take, but this is after the fact. It will eventually turn up. I have just started typing notes into my phone. Now all of my notes are condensed into one particular spot. So far, so good! If you are calling a doctor’s office or pharmacy, it is ideal to have your medical records and current prescription information nearby. But, if you forget, don’t beat yourself up over it. It is most likely they have your information on file and can look it up for you. Repeating the same thing is common to many individuals with TBI. A while back, for instance, someone told you that “you keep repeating yourself and it’s annoying.” These words caused you to clam up even more. For your information, this is something I am currently working on. Go ahead and tell me I am repeating myself, but do not tell me it is “really annoying.” That just isn’t nice! Would you say that to your children? Would you say that to a loved one or friend? Probably not. So just think twice, okay!

Inspiration Call: Micropoetry Monday

Source: Inspiration Call: Micropoetry Monday The ship is sinking Or maybe it already has. We need to get EVERYONE to safety Everyone to safety NOW! We do not have time for too many questions or arguments or analysis. The time is NOW, and we must ACT. Monday Monday! How is everyone doing today? Well, I hope! I am trying to stay organized today without much luck. I realize I need to make FIRM and DECISIVE DECISIONS. It is okay to ask someone to repeat themselves. Communication is so important, and, because of this, we need to make sure we understand the big picture. It can be frustrating, but being able to activly participae in the conversation wins in the end. I will do my best to follow this idea and BE CONFIDENT in what comes out in the end. Have a wonderful day!

Happiness is a piece of cake. This is the inspirational call for today. What does this mean to you? Does it mean happiness is simple and easy, or that it actually IS a piece of cake? Happiness can be “simple” and “easy” if you ask yourself to make it this way. It is a very nice and sunny day here in Reston, Virginia, and I can hear birds chirping outside. I am enjoying a cup of coffee as well. Now to the actual “cake” situation. I have all of the ingredients to make a cake today. It will take a while and some consentration and dedication, but I will DO IT! I will let you know how it turns out! Have a HAPPY DAY!
